Synaesthesia is a condition whereby someone can use another sense to perceive something. The most prominent being being able to ‘see’ sound. They aren’t seeing the soundwaves propagate through the world but rather they would be able to see colours based on sound. While I don’t have this condition, I set out to replicate this by creating a motion graphic video to a soundscape I created using only recorded sound effects.

Style Frames

The first step was to record sound effects and then create a soundtrack from them. I used various sounds such as coffee shop ambience, bus engines, A/C compressors, etc. After that I created basic shapes that one would see and laid out a composition in frames. It become rather straightforward to associate every movement with each percussive or melodic element in the song.
